About the San Mateo Highlands

The X-100
At 1586 Lexington Avenue, the X-100 was designed by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons with structural engineer William R. Mason and gardens by Douglas Baylis. The 2,310-square-foot steel house opened on October 6, 1956, and drew about 150,000 visitors in three months. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, the only individual Eichler home on the Register. Read more on our X-100 page.
Other Highlands history
Pietro Belluschi’s two-story Life House was built here and published in Life magazine in October 1958. Designs Eichler commissioned from Aaron Green in 1961 were never built.
